IV Compost Collective
St. Mike has partnered with the IV Compost Collective (IVCC) by hosting a few compost piles in our garden, which are managed by the IVCC's "Dirt Riders". The IVCC provides a free food scrap pick-up service to residents in Isla Vista, utilizing 5 gallon buckets and an electric bike. The food scraps are composted and used as fertilizer for community gardens, such as ours. Composting helps divert waste from landfills, lowers greenhouse gas emissions, and eliminates the need for chemical fertilizers. Creating compost for community gardens allows us to help reintroduce a closed-loop food system in IV. If you would like to help IVCC grow, consider participating in their data collection by weighing your food scraps on the scale and entering the data by using the QR code located at the compost piles.
