Deacons: A well kept secret
Deacons: a well-kept secret
- Have you ever been curious clergy who wear a diagonal stole like a girl scout?
- Have you thought about ordination but you don’t feel called to be the priest or pastor of a church?
- Do you have a heart for social justice and a thirst to translate the Gospel into action that makes a difference in the world?
You might be called to be a deacon
Deacons have specifically assigned roles in the worship service but their main ministry takes places out in the world. Deacons are ordained people who are called most particularly to serve the poor, elderly, young, sick and lonely – in other words, the most vulnerable among us. Deacons usually have careers outside the church or are retired, as they are generally non-stipendiary within the church. Deacons are not called to leave the world – but to bring the Church into the world and to interpret the needs of the world to the Church!
On Sunday, October 23rd you are invited to learn more about more about the diaconate, which some people call the best-kept secret in the Episcopal Church! Join the Venerable Dr. Joanne Leslie at St. Michael’s University Church in Isla Vista for a forum on the diacoate. Deacon Joanne, the recently appointed archdeacon of the diocese of Los Angeles, is a former professor of public health at UCLA and has had a long career working on maternal and child health projects in West Africa. She will serve as guest deacon and preacher at St. Mike’s 10am service. Following worship and coffee hour, she will offer a forum that is open to parishioners from St. Mike’s, UCSB students, folks from local area churches and anyone who wants to learn more about the what, why and how of being a deacon. Join us!
